Enough Sleep In Recognition Of The One Who Runs The World.

I am often surprised by how much happiness I carry into the day having slept 7 hours or more, okay at-least 6. (I mean, who dare sleeps for 7 these days with an un-updated Instagram?)

Yet this is not always my practice.

I have noticed a notorious habit with me especially at night.

I am often hopelessly drawn to my smartphone as the day ends.

All these texts I need to reply, emails I didn’t see, and oh boy, I haven’t posted on Twitter since 1940!

Then those bottomless social media news feeds that get you scrolling into eternity.

So basically, what happens is that I end up with the later (if not best) part of my day consuming media (while compromising loads of tiny but precious family moments) instead of getting to bed early.

Of course, there is rarely any biblical mandate to explicitly warn us about sleep, or the lack of it. (Unless you want to squeeze out some surprising lessons from Euticus’ window plunge in Acts 20:7)

Personally, though, the devil is always in my doodling, my spontaneous gadget-doodling I do on my phone late almost every night.

I learnt the other day that the blue light from our gadgets compromises hormones like melatonin, which ought to make us sleepy at night.

And so what happens, my sleep is constantly postponed even when my body is screaming tired, and so, I often sleep really late trying to emoji all earth’s residents, (no I call it “downloading  important docs.”)

As a result, I enter a spiritual danger zone as I rush through my means of grace of prayer and Bible study, this, I am discovering, is a habit no longer inconsequential.

My observation in this tyrannical tech-age is,  a simple act of subduing my thumbs at night, in light of who runs the world allows me a good night’s sleep which eventually fuels my highest aspiration, to wake up as a worshiper, rather than a slave.

Latest Technology and human ingenuity, may allow us to switch on robots all night as we go to bed, but no innovation has substituted beds yet. Sufficient sleep is not an invention of neuro-scientists, it’s God’s means of grace to remind us who runs the world. and who doesn’t.

We place our emoji-soaked heads on pillows every day to remind ourselves of who runs the world, who “never sleeps not slumbers.” (Ps 121:4)

Watching my sleep patterns has, therefore, helped me understand what and who I really worship—more often than I would like to admit.

For now, I am glad, the fight continues but at least, I am aspiring to wake as a worshiper of God, and therefore happier.

But let’s talk about your tech habits, how have you noticed them shape your faith, for better or for worse?

That is a great question at the end. Let me think about how to respond.
