Conviction, As Fount Church Opens Doors in Kampala

“As a result, multiple Kampala churches have been awakened to a throng of Berea-like believers.”

Everyone needs a friend they can call upon when they feel entangled in spiritual lies—a friend you can bounce off biblical ideas before you too are tempted to “dilute” others.

A friend ready to speak God’s word gently yet bravely, reminding you of the spiritual shallows you easily incline to—a friend willing to die on the same (sometimes theological) hill when it comes to “generational curses, demon possession,” among other common yet biblically unengaged unspiritual diets.

For many years, I have had two friends in that category, Allan Mugenyi and Joseph Byamukama. Back in the day, when people were on Facebook, our young fiery brains launched spiritual missiles from laptops everywhere, at all heretics and aspiring heretics alike. Lord help!

Over time, I guess in God’s mercy (and I suspect little families to now occupy our digital time), we softened a bit in our spiritual face-offs online (yet we didn’t in our biblical convictions, especially concerning salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, as the Bible alone teaches).

It was in this journey of friendship that guys like Joseph and Allan demonstrated admirable tenacity among us to defend the gospel at all costs. We soon started to hang out around them and never left.

Recently, by sheer grace, Joseph’s leadership, alongside more stirred friends I have come to theologically trust, like Dennis, Isaac, Mark, and Malcolm, has led him to continue a work that only God has sustained through the last 5-7 years of discipleship and evangelism in Kampala.

The launch of Fount Church has not been a “one-man-of-God” inspired launch but a culmination of young Kampalans spending years rightly dividing the word of truth through multiple inductive Bible studies, the most longstanding locally mobilised I have known around here.

The Fount Church, launched January 5th, 2025, comes as a healthy alternative in our city, at a time when we need less and less politicised and prosperity-driven, attractional, man-centred churches. Churches that have been a staple for many lately.

Sure, none of us (including those at Fount Church) are immune to these distractions from the gospel, yet there is something remarkable about the Bukoto church plant, especially in the way it has progressed through “unflashy” years of studying God’s word (Romans for 2 plus years, Job, among others). Indeed, like the German protestant reformer Martin Luther put it, “The word did all the work.”

Sanctified wrestling through these discussions has bred conversations on defending the Christian faith (see Phaneroo report) and spurred more Kampala’s young and stirred, towards the “new old way”, namely, faithful interpretation of the Bible in context, grammatically, historically, and relevantly, for ourselves and others.

As a result, multiple Kampala churches have been awakened to a throng of Berea-like believers, ready to both ask questions about spiritual practices in their churches in light of sufficient faith once handed down.

Many have since returned to their congregations more spiritually “woke” (to loosely borrow the term)—towards the building up of God’s people.

And in that sense, praise God!

Veracity Fount has come out as a leader in putting more theology on more Kampala’s streets and pews (including multiple WhatsApp groups)—proving itself to be a somewhat boundary-pushing ministry.

I know firsthand that in ministry, the temptation to traditionalism, hype, formalism, routine, “chill mode,” and superficiality is always there. That’s why it’s exciting to see what God may be doing with a whole generation like this willing to take God’s word seriously, to the dot.

That’s my prayer too. Congratulations, The Fount Church!

(I’m eager and curious to hear what God may be stirring in your part of the City too; don’t hesitate to reach out, in case you need that momentum documented.)
